Synthesia AI Video Generator Review: Is the Free Plan Actually Useful for Content Creators?
Synthesia.AI: Professional Video from Text or a Marketing Lie? A Review That Will Save You Time
My honest, step-by-step test of the most famous AI avatar generator and why its free plan might be useless for you
For me, as a blogger and writer, there’s always one problem: time. I can write a dozen articles, but turning them into YouTube videos takes hours of editing, voiceover recording, and searching for footage.
When I learned about Synthesia.AI, which promises professional-quality AI videos from text in minutes, I thought, “Oh, this is a magic wand!” Finally, I can run my content creation full-time!
But it turns out there’s a chasm between the promises of AI services and reality, paved with marketing gimmicks. I spent almost an hour testing them, so you don’t have to waste a minute: here’s my honest review of Synthesia.AI, which will show you whether this AI avatar is truly ready to replace video production.

AI Review
Synthesia promises to turn text into video in minutes. That’s good; it saves time. But I read that the service is free, and here there’s a pricing table at the top. I’m really curious: why are there prices if it’s free?
The free plan limits video length to 3 minutes. That should be enough, since my articles are usually 4 minutes long. At first, I didn’t notice that the Starter plan includes the “Downloading your videos” feature. But it’s also missing from the more expensive plans in the summary view.

Registration
I chose Basic and began the short and simple registration process. There are three options: using your email address, using Gmail (which I find the most convenient), and using SAML SSO. You can send teammates invitations if you want.
Then, before you start creating your first video, there’s a questionnaire. I don’t know if they do this for statistics or if the choice actually influences what happens in the video, since I couldn’t find any way to change this choice in the settings.Process
Next, you need to write video instructions in as much detail as possible, outlining what you want to see in your video. Then, describe your potential audience.

As an experiment, I decided to make a video based on one of my recently written articles: Multitasking is a “Red Flag” for Business.

I wrote this prompt: “Create a compelling and informative video summary of my article. The video must be exactly 3 minutes long. Use the key takeaways, main arguments, and conclusions from the provided article text. The tone should be expert and engaging, yet youthful (targeting Millennials and Gen Z). Include a clear Call-to-Action at the end: Read the full article for more in-depth information.”
To describe the audience, I wrote the following:"The audience is a mix of young entrepreneurs, seasoned business owners who might be overlooking key operational issues, industry specialists and decision-makers who value data and practical benefits, and a broader group of people interested in the topic, seeking a simple explanation or an overall review. Specifically target Millennials and Gen Z young professionals and business leaders."
After that, I pasted it into the form on the website and clicked the Create Video button.
One minute and the video is ready! Or so I thought.

It turned out it wasn’t a video; rather, when the AI was running, various elements appeared on the screen.
In the end, the video took 9 minutes to create. Even though I wrote that the video should be 3 minutes long, the AI only made it 1:49.

Yeah! That’s not what we agreed on!
Result evaluation: What went wrong?
First, the AI didn’t follow the instructions and didn’t create a 3-minute video.
Second, if you look at the avatar’s mouth, you can often see the lips and teeth sticking together from time to time.
Third, some of the cutscenes were just awful!
My impressions of using it
They promised a free download, but didn’t let me download it — an immediate negative. The inability to download videos makes the free plan practically useless for content creation. Here are my key findings:
- Job security: AI has great potential, but it’s not yet something that can replace your own work. video editors don’t have to worry about losing their jobs yet;
- Voice acting: I liked the voice acting; it doesn’t sound robotic, but it’s too fast for me;
- Visual style: I didn’t quite like the way the video looked, like it was filmed for a news report or an office advertisement;
- Customization: I would have liked to add my own text and my own avatar in a room;
- Survey utility: The topic selection turned out to be just a survey for statistics and didn’t affect the video settings.
While AI is still busy making empty promises about "free" downloads, I’m focused on creating things that are actually interesting. Every raccoon in the lab 🦝 knows that quality takes effort. Maybe you’ll find something useful for your real video setup or just something cute to keep you company while you edit?
