4 Disney Secrets You Didn’t Know

Funny secrets that Mickey Mouse and his friends hide. Why do they wear gloves, and how do their clothes speak about their “humanity”?

I’ve been watching Disney cartoons since I was a child, and only as I got older did I start asking questions that didn’t seem obvious before.

Why does Mickey Mouse have four fingers? Why does Winnie the Pooh have a T-shirt and Piglet doesn’t?

I decided to find the answers to these questions, and here’s what I found out.

Four fingers

If you look closely, most Disney cartoon characters have 4 fingers. I wondered why this is so.

It turns out the reason is simple: it is much faster to draw 4 fingers on each frame than 5. This saves 20% of the time on each frame.

And before this process was only manual and labor-intensive.

The second reason is that with thicker fingers the characters look more friendly, while five thin fingers could merge on the screen and look like a “bunch of bananas”.

Cartoon characters in gloves

Initially, the cartoons were all black and white, and the presence of gloves easily highlighted the hands. Otherwise, the whole figure simply merged. With the black and white contrast, the movements became clearly visible. Here is such a clever and interesting trick. Over time, this element became a feature, and they still haven’t gotten rid of it.

In my opinion, gloves suit Mickey Mouse and other characters very well.

Cartoon characters without pants

I’ve been asking myself this question since childhood. Why do adult characters walk around without pants? It’s so funny.

Let’s remember Darkwing Duck and his pilot, Launchpad McQuack. Darkwing Duck wears a jacket, cape, mask, and hat, and Launchpad McQuack wears a helmet, jacket, and pants.

Then in Cinderella, the mice wear T-shirts, shoes, jackets, and even hats. But they don’t have pants.

Winnie the Pooh is the only one of all the friends to wear a T-shirt, and Tigger, Rabbit, Eeyore, Owl, and Piglet are all naked. I started looking for materials to find out the reason.

It turns out that the more clothes a hero has, the more humanized he is. For example, Launchpad McQuack is fully dressed because he even has a human job; he is a pilot.

In Winnie-the-Pooh, the animals don’t have clothes because they’re toys. But Winnie does because he’s the main character, and his red T-shirt is very bright, and it makes him stand out. Although my favorite characters in this cartoon are Tigger and Rabbit. Which of the characters do you like more?

In Cinderella, the mice are dressed as if they were engaged in human activities — they can sew.

Simple faces

Cartoon characters usually have very simple faces: eyes are either dots or dots in ovals.

This is done so that emotions are understandable to people of any age and from any country.

Colors and clothing

The colors of the characters and their clothing are usually bright, and the characters’ clothing usually remains unchanged. This is done so that viewers can immediately recognize the character by their appearance and clothing.

I’m not just a viewer of movies and cartoons; I’m also creating my own things. Maybe you’ll find something necessary here or cute here 🦝?
