How to Bypass “Do Not Disturb” on Android: Emergency Call Settings & Automation Tips

How to Bypass “Do Not Disturb” on Android: The Secret Trick for Emergency Calls

Learn how to whitelist VIP contacts or use a secret keyword to make your phone ring, even when it’s set to silent

Do you keep your phone on silent mode all day to stay focused and avoid the endless pinging of notifications? It’s a fantastic habit for productivity, but it comes with a nagging risk: what happens if there’s a real emergency and your family can’t get through to you?

Many people assume that only iPhones have a “secret bypass” feature for silent mode. In reality, Android is even more flexible and powerful. In this article, I’ll show you two ways to stay reachable for the people who matter most  - from simple system settings to advanced automation that triggers a ringtone based on a secret keyword.

You’ll only need a couple of minutes and a little finger-tapping  -  it’s so simple that even your cat could probably pull it off. Here is how to get it done.

Tired of missing urgent calls? Use this secret Android trick to let VIP contacts break through your silent mode settings instantly

Method 1: The Native Android Way (Using “Do Not Disturb”)

Most Android smartphones (Samsung, Xiaomi, Pixel, Realme, etc.) have a built-in feature that allows specific people to “break through” any silent mode. They won’t even need to use secret code words  -  they will be able to get through to you directly.

  1. Open your Contacts app and select the person you want to whitelist (e.g., your spouse or a parent).
  2. Add this contact to your “Favorites” (usually represented by a star icon ⭐).
  3. Go to your phone’s Settings -> Sound & Vibration (or Notifications) -> “Do Not Disturb.”
  4. Look for “Calls” (or sometimes “People” / “Exceptions”).
  5. Under the “Allow calls” (or “Allow calls from”) option, select “Starred contacts only” or “Favorites only.”

Note: please keep in mind that the names of these sections might vary slightly depending on your smartphone’s brand and specific UI skin.

The Result: your phone will remain silent for everyone else, but if someone on your “favorites” list calls, your Android will immediately ring at full volume.

Method 2: The Pro “Secret Code” Method (Using Third-Party Apps)

If you want to replicate the exact scenario from the video  - where silent mode is automatically disabled only after receiving an SMS with a specific “code word”  -  you can do this on Android using a free app called MacroDroid. Think of it as the ultimate Android equivalent to iOS Shortcuts.

Setting the Trigger (The Condition):

  1. Download MacroDroid from the Google Play Store.
  2. In the app, tap “Add Macro.”
  3. In the red Triggers section, tap the “+” button -> SMS Received -> SMS Content.
  4. Choose “Select Contact” (pick the specific person) and in the “Message Content” field, type your secret keyword (e.g., SOUND).

Setting the Actions (What happens next):

  1. In the blue Actions section, tap the “+” button -> Volume -> Priority Mode/Do Not Disturb -> Set it to Allow All (this will turn off silent mode/vibration).
  2. Tap the “+” button in the blue section again -> Volume -> Change Volume -> Set your Notification and Ringer volume sliders to 100%.
  3. (Optional) Tap the “+” button -> Media -> Play Sound and select any ringtone you prefer.

Finally, give your macro a name (e.g., “Silent Mode Bypass”) and save it. Now, your Android will react to your secret keyword just like the iPhone from the video!

Note: for the macro to work reliably, ensure that MacroDroid is not “killed” by your system. You should grant it permission to run in the background and disable battery optimization for the app in your phone settings.

There you have it! Now you can relax knowing that your phone won’t annoy you with constant notifications, but the people who really matter can still get through to you whenever there’s an emergency.

Keeping your phone on silent mode is a great first step toward mastering your focus and productivity.

But clearing your notification tray is only half the battle.
